Integrable Models and Confinement in (2 + 1)-dimensional Weakly-coupled Yang-mills Theory

We generalize the (2 + 1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theory to an anisotropic form with two gauge coupling constants e and e. In axial gauge, a regularized version of the Hamiltonian of this gauge theory is H0 + e H1, where H0 is the Hamiltonian of a set of (1 + 1)-dimensional principal chiral sigma nonlinear models and H1 couples charge densities of these sigma models. We treatH1 as the interactio...

Conformal Invariance Of Interacting WZNW Models

We consider two level k WZNW models coupled to each other through a generalized Thirring-like current-current interaction. It is shown that in the large k limit, this interacting system can be presented as a two-parameter perturbation around a nonunitary WZNW model. The perturbation operators are the sigma model kinetic terms with metric related to the Thirring coupling constants. The renormali...

Solitons in 1+1 Dimensional Gauged Sigma Models

We study soliton solutions in 1+1 dimensional gauged sigma models, obtained by dimensional reduction from its 2+1 dimensional counterparts. We show that the Bogomol’nyi bound of these models can be expressed in terms of two conserved charges in a similar way to that of the BPS dyons in 3 + 1 dimensions. Purely magnetic vortices of the 2+1 dimensional completely gauged sigma model appear as char...

Dimensional crossover and metal-insulator transition in quasi-two-dimensional disordered conductors

We study the metal-insulator transition (MIT) in weakly coupled disordered planes on the basis of a Non-Linear Sigma Model (NLσM). Using two different methods, a renormalization group (RG) approach and an auxiliary field method, we calculate the crossover length between a 2D regime at small length scales and a 3D regime at larger length scales. The 3D regime is described by an anisotropic 3D NL...

Integrable Sigma Models with Θ = Π

A fundamental result relevant to spin chains and two-dimensional disordered systems is that the sphere sigma model with instanton coupling θ = π has a non-trivial low-energy fixed point and a gapless spectrum. This result is extended to two series of sigma models with θ = π: the SU (N)/SO(N) sigma models flow to the SU (N) 1 WZW theory, while the O(2N)/O(N) × O(N) models flow to O(2N) 1 (2N fre...
